Is Francisco Liriano the Franchise?

With all of the speculation over the Minnesota Twins starting rotation being up for grabs, one major question to answer is, should Francisco Liriano be deemed the “Franchise” now or should this tag go to Delmon Young, Joe Mauer, Michael Cuddyer (new team leader) or Justin Morneau?

For those of you who haven’t seen the Twins Territory commercial that aired on the Super Bowl and was created by Periscope, who really is the face of the Twins these days?

With Torii Hunter gone, who was the clear leader in the clubhouse as well as Mr. Cy Young Santana gone, which Twin will take over as the identity and leader that this club needs for 2008 as well as the future? My guess is that it will be one of the three gentleman featured in the Twins Territory clip, as much as I wish it was TK, that is not who I’m referring to.

Who do you think the Twins need to be the identity of the team this year?

First, certainly not Morneau. While he is talented, he does not reek of “leader” in any way. And Liriano hasn’t been around enough the past two years to hold a presence as the face of the team at all. Losing Hunter was a much huger blow than Santana. Santana is a future Yankee and he always was. Hunter should have been kept around. SO…to answer your question, I would say it maybe is Cuddy because his public persona is naturally likable , but will be Mauer if he can stay on top of it. There’s such an anticipation for him to be the next Puckett in our eyes, however, that I am not sure anyone could live up to it.

Thanks Kristiane for your thoughts. I too would say the Cuddyer is the best bet to be the favorite “persona” for the Twins to be represented by. As far as best player, and guy that can carry the team with skills, it has to be Morneau. Leadership in the clubhouse is probably best coming from someone who is not the superstar.

We are talking about two different things here. The leader of the twins and the face of the twins. If Liriano can live up to the hype and fill the shoes Santana left behind he will be the face of the twins. We will just have to wait and see if he is the same pitcher after his surgery. The leader role in the clubhouse falls on a backup player. Mike Redmond. Redmond cannot contribute to the game in a physical manner everday but he contributes in other ways. He knows what it is like to be on a championship team, and what it takes to go all the way. On a team full of new and young faces, he is a veteran that many look up to.

    The next question is…

Will Livan Hernandez prosper or turn out to be the next Ramon Ortiz/Sidney Ponson??

I sure hope that Livan Hernandez can at least compete to the level Carlos Silva did, we cannot afford another Ortiz/Ponson for what Hernandez is making, get through 6 or 7 innings, hopefully with some run support and that could be 12 wins.
